A Leutnant and Beobachter [Observer] of 2 Staffel Aufklärungsgruppe 122 he was killed on a reconnaissance mission on 17 October 1939 when his aircraft (He111H-1; Wn.2708; F6+PK) was attacked by fighters of 41 Squadron RAF flown by Pilot Officer Howard Peter Blatchford), Sergeant Ted Shipman and Sergeant Albert Harris). The damaged aircraft crashed into the North Sea east of Whitby and Leutnant Kretschmer's body was never recovered. Another crewman of the aircraft, Unteroffizer and Bordmechaniker [Flight Engineer] Hugo Sauer was also killed in the attack.
