Mrs. Bettie Rees Stephens, 32, Ferndale, died Wednesday evening as the result of an automobile accident near Fortuna. She was born December 18, 1926, in San Francisco.
She came to Humboldt County as a small child. She was a teacher at the South Fortuna elementary school. Prior to that she taught at the Van Duzen and Willow Creek elementary schools.
She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Ferndale, the California Teachers Association the National Educators Association, and the Eel River Valley Teachers Association.
Survivors include her husband, Donald D. Stephens; children Lynn, Sandra Lee, Sue Ann, John Lincoln and Donald Stephens, Jr., all of Ferndale; parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Rees, Arcata; brother, Orville Rees, Ferndale; uncles, John and T. J. McGowan, both residing in Nevada; William R. McGowan, Los Angeles; and an aunt, Mrs. Tessa Wood, Arcata.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel of Citizen's Mortuary of Ferndale. The Rev. William Gibson will officiate. Inurnment will follow in Ocean View crematory, Eureka.
