Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned as Captain of Company F, 29th New York Volunteer Infantry on May 21, 1861. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on May 23, 1861 and Colonel and commander on June 9, 1862, he led his men at the August 29, 1862 Battle of Groveton, Virginia, where he was shot in the right arm. He twice briefly commanded his brigade in the early part of 1863, and was discharged due to disability on April 13, 1863.
