Virginia Spann Bedwell died on October 20, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Watson Bedwell; parents, Julius Valentine Spann and Clementine Olive Spann; and five siblings. She is survived by a brother, children, eight grandchildren, one great-grand child, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.

MOBILE - Virginia Spann Bedwell, age 95, passed away peacefully at her home in Mobile, Alabama, on October 20, 2016. She was born in 1921, in Chapman, Alabama, a child of the Great Depression, and grew up there with six siblings.

She studied violin, piano, voice and dance in her formative years. She attended Montevallo University and earned a degree in Education in 1943. She taught English and Spanish at Selma High School and was the faculty director of the theatre program. She met the love of her life, Norman Watson Bedwell, who was teaching Industrial Arts at Selma High. They were married in August of 1948, and traveled to Panama City, Florida and later to Illinois, where her husband received his Ph.D. at Bradley University.

She retired from teaching to raise her three children. The family moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 1956 when Dr. Bedwell took a job as a professor at the University of Alabama. She was active in her church, Forest Lake United Methodist Church, serving in many roles there, including Sunday school, the Church Choir, Vacation Bible School and the United Methodist Women.

She played violin for the University Symphony for many years and served in the PTA while her children were in school. She moved to Mobile in 1993 and was a resident at University Oaks Retirement Community at the time of her passing.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Norman Watson Bedwell; her parents, Julius Valentine Spann and Clementine Olive Spann; and five of her siblings.

She is survived by a brother, Edward Manning Spann of Penscola, Florida; and her children, Norman Joseph Bedwell (Susan), of Willow Spring, North Carolina, Dr. Noel Wheeler Bedwell (Shannon), Gloria Ann Bedwell King (Robert); eight grandchildren, one great-grand child, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Her sweet and generous spirit will be sorely missed on this earth by family and friends.

The family wishes to thank the devoted caregivers who attended her faithfully in her later years, Maxine Johnson, Christine Blackston, Creesie Bonner, Shawndra Bradley, and Andrea Dixon.

A graveside funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. from the Memory Hill Gardens Cemetery, Tuscaloosa, AL.
