Derby Daily Telegraph, Monday 8th April 1918
A verdict of ‘Accidental Death' was returned at an inquest held at the Police Station this (Monday) morning by the borough coroner respecting the death of James Douglas McKie Sutherland (75), formerly an advertising agent of St Giles Road. Mrs James Sutherland, compositer, 54 Moore Street, son, spoke to seeing his father after the accident occurred. The deceased told him he had been knocked down by a horse and dray in Victoria Street. The witness added that his father was very deaf and stooped a good deal. Charles Frederick Hall, 56, Leonard Street, who was driving a dray belonging to the Derby Co-operative Society, said that he saw the deceased standing on the tramlines facing Messrs Woolworth's shop in Victoria Street. The deceased walked into the horse and was knocked down. Police Constable Talbot spoke to seeing the deceased fall. No blame attached to the driver of the dray and the latter was proceeding at a walking pace. Dr Iliffe attributed death to bronchitis accelerated by injuries sustained in the accident.
