TUSCALOOSA | Marguerite Louise Black, age 86, of Tuscaloosa, died July 28, 2014, at Hospice of West Alabama. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, July 31, 2014, at Memory Chapel with Reverend Rod Poovey officiating. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Memory Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Basile Black; father, Leon M. Ryan, Sr.; and mother, Tiny Ryan.
Survivors include her daughters, Linda Black Johnson (Chesley) and Elaine Black Payton (Wayne), both of Tuscaloosa; sister, Lydia Ryan Woodman (David) of Little Rock, Ark.; brother, Leon Marshall Ryan, Jr. (Ann) of Fosters; grandchildren, Erin Elaine Johnson of Tuscaloosa, Christopher Ryan Johnson (Kelly) of Daphne and Kerry Johnson Bierley (Brandon) of Tuscaloosa; and great-grandchildren, Liliana Claribel Johnson and Lucilia Abigail Johnson, both of Daphne.
Marguerite was born in Birmingham but lived almost all her life in the Tuscaloosa area and had deep family ties here. She grew up during the Depression. As a teenager and young woman, she worked at the old Raymon's Department Store downtown. She graduated from Tuscaloosa High School and then attended Business College. She married Thomas Black in 1947, and they were together for over forty years until his death in 1989. She was employed, at various times, at a finance company, the VA Credit Union, and, for many years, at what is now the Tuscaloosa Credit Union. Her husband was the manager there, when they had just gotten started and were located in the basement of the old Federal Building.
After her husband's death, Marguerite lived independently for the next twenty-five years of her life. She loved her church, her family, and her friends. She was an avid doll collector during her later years and loved to show off her collection. She will be greatly missed, but we know she is now with her Heavenly Father and her loved ones on the other side, whom she longed to see again.
Pallbearers will be Christopher Johnson, Brandon Bierley, Martin Johnson, Chesley Johnson, Kerry Bierley, Kelly Johnson and Wayne Payton.
Honorary pallbearers are Marguerite's Sunday School class members at Calvary Baptist, staff members of Hospice of West Alabama, Starr and Johnny Farley and Vicki Dobbs.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Hospice of West Alabama.
