Josephine was born Oct. 22, 1930, in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, to the late George and Eva (Payne) Gibson.
Josephine graduated Cum Laude from Upper Sandusky High School in 1948 and was a 1951 graduate of Bowling Green State University with a degree in education. She worked for 22 years teaching math at Berlin-Milan Schools.
Josephine was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Oxford Township, where she was secretary of the Adult Fellowship for a few years. She volunteered in the manuscripts department of the Hayes Center, Fremont, for 14 years. Her hobbies were genealogy, reading and watching football games on TV. Her family was everything to her.
Josephine is survived by her husband of 60 years, the Rev. Edgar Shelly Jr., whom she married Sept. 3, 1954; daughter, Rachel Borck of Sandusky; son, Timothy (Holly) Shelly of Milan; granddaughter, Hannah; sister, Zilpha (Homer) Darling of Dunedin, Fla.; brother, William (Jackie) Gibson of Bowling Green, Ohio; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to her parents, Josephine was preceded in death by her son, Eric Shelly, in 1979; and brother, Eugene Gibson.
Friends may visit from 3-6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory Milan Chapel, 1 S. Main St., Milan. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16, at St. John's United Church of Christ, 2712 Mason Road, Oxford Township, Milan, with the Rev. Wendy Schindler-Chasney presiding. Inurnment will take place in St. John's UCC Cemetery, Oxford Township, Milan.
