Hettie Adele Todd Newell, 93, of Madison, Georgia, died on Palm Sunday,April 13, 2014. A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Newell was the daughter of the late Mary Louise Miller Todd and Eugene Todd. She was preceded in death by her three brothers, Harold Todd, Eugene Todd and Chester Todd. She was a missionary and a member of Bethany Baptist Church. She graduated from Philadelphia School of the Bible (now Cairn University) and went to Peru, South America, in 1946 where she served the Lord for two terms. She returned to Philadelphia to care for her mother and began ministering to Puertorican children, using her fluent Spanish. In 1966, she married Earl Newell, who was pastoring a church in Kentucky. In 1969, the Newell's moved to Madison, Georgia, and began serving with Source of Light Ministries International. While working with the mission, Earl and Adele opened branches in Peru, Chile, Kenya, and worked in Guatemala. After Earl's death in 1998, Mrs. Newell continued to serve in the Source of Light Headquarters working with Hispanic students studying the Bible correspondence lessons. She continued working with Spanish students after she moved to Lexington, Georgia, to live with her son David and his wife Anna Gay, serving with Neighborhood Gospel Missions. Mrs. Newell retired in 2006 and moved to an assisted living facility in Greensboro, Georgia, where she lived until 2013 when she moved to a skilled nursing home in Madison, Georgia.Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Watkins, Madison, Georgia, three sons, David Newell, Madison, Georgia, Richard Newell, Laurel, Maryland, and John Newell, Hyden, Kentucky; 15 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren.Funeral services will be Friday, April 18, at 10:30 AM at Bethany Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Ventrello officiating, Burial will be in the church cemetery.The family will receive friends 6:00-9:00 PM Thursday, April 17, at Bethany Baptist Church.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Source of Light Ministries, 1101 Mission Road, Madison, Georgia, 30650.Bridges Funeral Home, Athens, Georgia is in charge of arrangements.www.BridgesFuneral.com
