After an illness extending over four
months, but only confined to her
bed for three days, Mrs Martha Lappin
of Durham Lead, Chiltern, passed
quietly and peacefully over to the,
great majority, heart troubles being
the cause of her death. Deceased,
who was born in Armagh (Ireland),
was 80 years of age. She came to
Victoria in "The Prince of the Seas"
ship in 1860, one of her shipmates
being her husband to be, Mr James
Lappin, whom two years after she
married. Mrs Lappin was a valued
member of the local Methodist faith
and by her death the church loses one
of her staunchest adherents. Mr. J
Lappin, who was one of the best
known and respected miners through
out the Chiltern district, predeceased
Mrs Lappin by thirteen years. Mrs
Lappin had a family of nine and she
is survived by three sons (Messrs
William, Jacob and Alfred) and one
daughter (Miss Matilda.) The funeral
took place to the Chiltern New
Cemetery on Saturday where the
services at the graveside were most
impressively read by the Rev V. H.
James. Mr A. H. Smith had charge
of the mortuary arrangements.
