Tribute & Message From The Family

Dominic J. Culotta passed away on October 23, 2016, surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness at the age of 89.

He was born on July 22, 1927 in Birmingham, Alabama to Rosa Maranto Culotta and Nicolo (Sam) Rosario Culotta. He graduated from Phillips High School, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a devoted, long-time member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Hoover.

Dominic owned and operated Culotta's Supermarket, a grocery store originally staited by his father, for decades on Graymont Avenue in Smithfield. He had the highest standards for his store; going
to the farmer's market to get fresh vegetables and making homemade Italian sausage, He was kind to his customers, giving them lines of credit and supporting community activities.

After closing the store, he was a model for how to remain active in retirement. He was always on the go, exercising at Lakeshore Foundation, traveling, and taking
care of the people around him. In the weeks before he died, he was able to visit Cefalu, Sicily to see the church where his parents were married before coming to the United States.

Most of all, Dominic was exceedingly kind to everyone. He cared for his wife, Gladys, during her illness and his sisters, Connie, Lena, and Sadye, as they aged, He loved the Lord, believing that loving his fellow man was the best way to show his faith.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gladys B, Culotta; his parents; his sisters, Rose Meshotto, Sadye C. Rocha, Lena Lucy Culotta, and Constance Culotta; and his brother Joseph A, Culotta. He is survived by his sister, Josephine
Culotta Jovings, and his brother, Jake R. Culotta, Sr.

He will be remembered as a caring brother, a wonderful uncle to his numerous nieces and nephews, and a loving step-father and step-grandfather to his wife‘s children and grandchildren.
