Actor. A native of Los Angeles, California, at the age of ten, he was cast by the Hal Roach Studios as the replacement for Mickey Daniels, the freckle-faced kid of the Our Gang series of shorts. He first appeared in the "Boys Will Be Joys," short, returning for sixteen more before concluding with "Noisy Noises" in 1929 and more films from 1930s to 1977. During World War II, he served in the US Army, after which he worked as a paint retailer, and was a semi-regular at the Hollywood Collectors Show in North Hollywood in. He eventually retired from acting in 1977 after his final film "The Big Bonk" to Nevada where in early October 2002 his body was found in the desert north of Las Vegas, bearing multiple stab wounds. A homeless man whom Smith had befriended and attempted to help was tried and convicted of the murder in 2005.
