Mayor, "Merchant Prince" of Winnipeg. James Ashdown was one of the founding fathers of Winnipeg, arriving on foot from Minnesota in 1868. His tinsmithery became a hardware store which became a Western Canadian empire. Several buildings in the Exchange District of downtown Winnipeg still display his name.
