Judge Henry A. Bundschu was born in Independence Missouri, and lived there his whole life. He was a federal referee in bankruptcy court. He provided for the first renovation of the 1859 Jail, established archives in the Independence Square's old courthouse, among many other philanthropies. Bundschu was a kind and charitable gentleman who always gave something to the community. Bundschu's estate left money to several area Catholic schools. St. Mary's benefited most from the bequest, receiving $800,000 to pay off a debt, plus more for capital improvements and scholarships. Avila and Rockhurst Colleges both received between $250,000 and $400,000.
