Deputy Sheriff Bill Cooper went home to be with Jesus, while serving the citizens of Sebastian County today at 1:15pm. Cpl. Cooper was 65 years old.
He was a good officer/man/husband/father. Bill served in the United States Marine Corp, and the Fort Smith Police Department.

Cpl. Cooper is survived by his wife, Ruth Cooper; 1 son: Scott Cooper of Bokoshe, Oklahoma; 1 sister: Ginger Cox of Van Buren, Arkansas; 3 precious grandchildren; other relatives; his brothers/sisters in Blue; his fellow Marines and many, many friends.
He was preceded in death by 1 brother: Keith Cooper.


Funeral services for Cpl. Cooper were held on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at the Fort Smith Convention Center in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
He was laid to rest at Oak Cemetery in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Pallbearers were the Sebastian County Sheriff Office Honor Guard.
Honorary pallbearers were all law enforcement officers.

"Corporal Bill Cooper was shot and killed after he and several other officers responded to a domestic violence call involving an armed subject at a home on the 4700 block of Highway 253.

The subject opened fire on responding officers with a rifle, fatally wounding Corporal Cooper and wounding the Hackett Police Department's chief, and pinning down multiple other officers. Corporal Cooper was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. The subject surrendered and was taken into custody a short time later.

Corporal Cooper was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Sebastian County Sheriff's Office for 16 years. Deputy Cooper had served with the county since 2001, according to Sheriff Bill Hollenbeck. Before his service in the sheriff's department, Cooper was a member of the Ft. Smith Police Department for about 5 years.
