Civil War Union Army Officer. He was enrolled in the 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 28, 1862, and was mustered in as 1st Sergeant on September 13, 1862. He served in that duty through the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, then recieved a commission of 2nd Lieutentant on February 22, 1863. Transferred to Company B to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Lieutenant Lewis Ayres, he served through the May 1863 Chancellorsville Campaign, and was honorably discharged on June 27, 1863.
