Mace, Co. H, 140th Inf., 35th Div., was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in WWI. His citation reads: "The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to John H. Mace, Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Exermont, France, September 18, 1918. Sergeant Mace volunteered to lead a detachment to attack a machine-gun nest which was holding up the advance of his battalion. Although severely wounded, he carried the position, killing the enemy gun crew and capturing the machine-gun." (General Orders No. 59, W.D. 1919)
Mace died at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Veteran's Hospital just north of the Leavenworth National Cemetery. He had been a patient there for 6 years prior to his death.
