Opera Singer. Graduated in French language and literature at the University of Gorky, he studied vocal singing with the tenor Virgilijus Noreika, making his debut in 1981 as Alfredo in "La Traviata" by Giuseppe Verdi. After an apprenticeship of about ten years, during which he performed in smaller theaters of Russia, he moved to Bratislava. The popularity obtained open the doors of theaters as important as the Wiener Staatsoper in Vienna, Royal Opera House in London (Carmen, 1991), the Opéra Bastille in Paris and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the latter in the role of Cavaradossi in Tosca. Initially, although equipped with a powerful dramatic tenor voice, he devoted himself to purely lyrical roles, especially Russians repeatedly supported in the main theaters of the world, among them stands out Boris Godunov, including he sang all three tenor roles, especially Dmitri, presented both in New York (1992) and at the Salzburg Festival(1994), the latter recorded live and highly appreciated by the critics. He died after a long battle against incurable disease.
