Russian Marshal. Minister of Defense from 1984 to 1987, he is also remembered because was removed from his dicastery due to unauthorized and not impeded landing on Red Square of a private plane piloted by a young german. Graduated Lieutenant at the Frunze Academy, Sokolov served in the World War II, commanding an armored unit of the Red Army on the front Russian-Japanese. In 1978 he was elevated to the rank of Marshal of the Soviet Union, and appointed commander in chief of the Red Army during the invasion of Afghanistan. Regarded as one of the most respected commanders, during his career he has received numerous awards and decorations, both in country and abroad, including Hero of the Soviet Union (1980), 3-times Order of Lenin, Order of the Red Star, Gold Medal for bravery, 11-times the Medal of the Jubilee of the Great Patriotic War, Order of the Red Banner and the Order of Karl Marx. Sokolov ended his active service as advisor at the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation.
