Lewis D. Bader was born in Green Hill on October 4, 1898. He never married, but traveled with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum Baily Circus for thirty-two years, playing lead trombone.
He was a member of Harold Barnes Tent No. 110, Circus Fans of America, and is in the Circus Hall of Fame in Venice, Florida.
Lewis played in Vaudeville orchestras during the winter months while the circus was in winter quarters in Florida.
He was in the movie, "The Greatest Show on Earth," with Betty Hutton, Cornell Wilde and Dorothy Lamour.
After retirement, Lewis lived with his mother in Springfield, and after her death, in a nursing home there where he died February 1, 1977. Lewis is buried in Ferncliff Cemetery there.

Lewis D. "Lew" Bader, 78, who traveled the length and breadth of the land as a trombonist in circus bands, died at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Courthouse Manor Nursing Home, Washington C.H., following two years of failing health.
He was born Oct. 4, 1898 in Green Hills, Ind., the son of John and Belle Thompson Bader, and had lived in Springfield for the past 59 years.
Mr. Bader was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 397; American Federation of Musicians Local 160 and an honorary member of the Harold Barnes tent No. 110, Circus Fans of America.
He was a member of the Ringling Brothers Barnum-Bailey Circus Band from 1923 to 1955 and played trombone with the Sells-Floto Circus prior to 1923. He also played in local vaudeville theaters when the circus was in winter quarters.
He was the last of his immediate family. Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
His body was taken to the Jackson, Lytle and Coffman Funeral Home where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery.
