Lieut John W. Billes/Bellis was a Civil War Union Army Officer. He was mustered in as a Private in Company M, 1st New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry on October 10, 1861. Promoted to Sergeant on November 1, 1862, he re-enlisted on January 1, 1863. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant of Company I on February 28, 1864, and served until he was killed at the Battle of Hawes Shop, Virginia.
