Obituary published in Woodbury, Gloucester Co, NJ newspaper "Gloucester County Democrat" on Thursday, July 17th 1902:
"Wm. N. Allen, aged 78 years, a prominent resident of Downer, was fatally injured at noon Friday, under car wheels. Mr. Allen, in endeavoring to board a moving train, missed his footing and fell to the tracks. The wheels of several cars ran over both legs, crushing them badly. The train was stopped, and Mr. Allen was made comfortable as possible in the baggage car, and taken to Cooper Hospital. The surgeons were preparing to amputate the crushed limbs when the unfortunate man died.
The remains were taken to the home of his son in Glassboro, where the funeral was held. Mr. Allen was a Civil War veteran, serving in Company A, 3rd N. J. Volunteers."
