Lynn James Allison, 82, of Ashton, passed away after a brief illness, Sunday, May 29, 2011, in California. The cause of death was lung cancer, which had spread throughout his entire body.
He was born December 11, 1928, in Blackfoot, Idaho, to Jim and Sarah Allison. He grew up and attended school in Ashton. He married Marie King in Belen, New Mexico, on September 17, 1949. They were later divorced.
He joined the U.S. Marine Corps when he was 17 years old and served most of his time on the Battleship, USS New Jersey. He was also serving in the 116th Combat Engineer Battalion of the Idaho National Guard when it was activated and sent to Korea. He wrote a book about the role of Company C of that Battalion entitled, "History of Company C, 116 Engineer Battalion Korean Expedition." The book is unpublished, but copies are available on CD for anyone desiring to read, or for researching their history. Former members of Company C have been having a small reunion once a month, having breakfast together and enjoying one another's company. Lynn was the prime mover in this effort. They would meet each month at a local caf. Later, they began meeting at an Idaho Falls restaurant as it was a more central location.
He received an Associate of Arts degree from El Camino Junior College in California in 1958, and a Bachelor of Science degree from California State College in Los Angeles in 1966. He worked full time and went to night school all those years in between the one degree and the other. He retired from Rockwell International in 1988 after 32 years of service as a Member of the Technical Staff. As part of the design staff for the Space Shuttle, he often traveled to the different space centers as a trouble shooter for Rockwell International. When he decided to retire, he moved back to his roots in Ashton where he built a lovely home mostly with his own hands. He spent his summers in Ashton and his winters in Southern California.
Lynn was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed woodwork. Besides building his own home, he helped others with their building projects and had many, many woodworking projects. He enjoyed mechanical work and electronics. He was still taking computer classes each winter while in California. He spent many of the winter months bicycling in Southern California and down into Mexico. He enjoyed traveling around the world with some of his special friends and traveled to see his children and grandchildren from California to Texas and points in between, often stopping to see old military buddies.
Lynn was an avid genealogy expert and after many, many years of research, he wrote a book entitled, "The James Allison Family, 1822-1999." He filled it with his research plus a tremendous amount of photographs of the extended Allison family.
Survivors include his dearest friend and companion of many years, Gina Armagost; daughters, Amy Lynne (Ward) Holtsclaw, Jan Marie Allison, Tracey (Robert) Reichardt, Melissa (Brad) Roskelley, Rebecca (Ralph) Oliver; and 25 grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters, Laura (Tom) Love of St. George, Utah, Marie Marshall of Clearfield, Utah, and Jane (Bill) Harvey of Las Vegas, Nevada; and two brothers, Clair (Allyn) Allison of Ashton and Daren (Donna) Allison of Temecula, California.
He was preceded in death by his father, James L. Allison; his mother, Sarah Call Allison; a son, Lynn James Allison Jr.; and brothers, Wayne L. and Jimmie L. Allison.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4, at the Ashton LDS Stake Center, 516 N. Second St., with Tom Mattingly, of the Ashton 2nd Ward bishopric, officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Baxter Funeral Home, 717 Main St., and from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Saturday, at the stake center prior to services. Interment will be in Pineview Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post 89.
