Norma Jean was a full grown elephant with the Clark and Walters Circus. She was the main attraction when one night, on July 17, 1972, she was struck and killed by lightning. Her trainer, Possum Red, was knocked thirty feet by the blast. She was buried on the spot where she died. A twelve foot limestone monument was erected on her grave.
The elephant that is now on top of the monument does not appear to be the original one.
Her grave is a town tourist attraction and there are signs pointing in the direction of her grave. Every August her memory is celebrated by an elephant walk, white elephant sale and a bake sale featuring elephant ears.
