Lucky was the best boy anybody could hope to have. He was a stray that was hanging around the country store down the street from our house. My dad asked the owner of the store if he could take him home, and the man said yes. Lucky was my birthday gift that year.

We bonded instantly & were best friends until he passed away. He was my shadow, especially in his last few months. He would follow me everywhere & cry if I left the house without him. He had so many adventures during his life - he was a well-traveled pup.

He liked to lay on the couch & watch Spongebob and the John Wayne marathons on AMC (he'd actually stare at the TV). He loved eating and sleeping too. He loved getting tummy rubs & enjoyed exploring outside. His last big adventure was hiking at Jarman's Gap on Skyline Drive.

He always had a smile on his face & loved giving "kisses" to people. Even when he went to the emergency vet, he gave a kiss to a lady in the waiting room. He had a "baby sister" whom he loved very much. They were playmates.

His usual daily routine was to wake up (he slept in my bed & was quite the bed hog, haha), then he'd trot down the hallway to the living room. He'd roll around on the floor a little bit, then he & baby sister would go outside for their walk. After he finished his business outside, he'd run as fast as he could back to the front door & start hopping up & down. I'd open the door & he'd run into the kitchen to eat his meal. Then he'd get on the couch & take a nap while watching his TV shows. In the afternoon, he'd get excited about his dinner and hop up & down again. Then at night, he'd follow me down the hallway to my room, climb in bed, and fall asleep (usually with his tongue stuck out).

Lucky could do all kinds of faces.... "elvis", grandpa face, jubilee tongue, and melty cheeks.

About a month before he died, he started having trouble walking. We went to the vet & they said that because of his age, it was probably just his old bones giving him trouble. He had a lump on his shoulder, but it was thought to be benign. On July 10, Lucky went to the emergency vet. He wasn't eating & was breathing heavily. They did blood tests & found that he had high levels of calcium, an indicator of cancer. They believed the growth on his shoulder was probably cancer (by this time, the lump had become larger).

That night, Lucky couldn't sleep. Every 30 seconds or so, he'd cry out in pain. He couldn't get comfortable no matter where he tried to lay down & I couldn't get him to take his pain pills. He kept spitting them out. The next morning when he & baby sister went for a walk, Lucky's legs gave out on him & he fell down in the front yard. I picked him up in a blanket, carried him to the car, and drove him to the vet. They said they could do tests & treatment on him, but Lucky looked so miserable. We all knew he'd never be his jolly self again. I didn't want to lose him, but he was in so much pain. We decided to have him put down.

I brought Lucky's Spongebob toy & "lovely lion" toy to the vet for him to snuggle with. I asked the vet to please keep the toys with him while they put him to sleep. I gave him a bunch of kisses, told him I loved him, told him I was sorry if I had ever hurt his feelings, and that was it. I couldn't watch them give him the shot. I didn't want that to be my last memory of him, so I left the room.
