HERMISTON — Longtime Hermiston resident Andrew Charles (Andy) Aichele long-time Hermiston resident, died peacefully surrounded by his family at the Good Shepherd Medical Center on Sunday, Feb. 4. He was 82. Andy fought a courageous, life-long battle with an auto-immune condition known as Burgher's Disease and finally succumbed to cancer of the lung.
Andy was born in Milton-Freewater on Sept. 6, 1924 to Frederick and Martha Aichele. He had nine brothers and sisters, Hannah Kralman, Milton Freewater; Alpha Coffman, Athena; Solomon Aichele, Portland; Victor Aichele, Tacoma, Wash.; Ida Palmer, Lynnwood, Wash.; Karl Aichele, Hermiston; Dorothy Kabanuk, College Place, Wash.; and two brothers who died as infants. He attended school and worked in Milton-Freewater until World War II broke out, at which time he moved to New York City to be with his brother Karl until he was drafted into the Army.
During that time he worked as a New York City taxicab driver and had many humorous stories to tell about his experience. Andy served in the Pacific front during his four-year tour. Following his discharge from the Army after the end of the war Andy met the love of his life, Dolores Faye McCollum. They were married on Sept. 17, 1946, in Lewiston, Idaho. They raised five children and lived together in Hermiston until Dolores died in 1983.
During his lifetime Andy had a variety of employment opportunities — farming with his father, green-chain lumber piler at the mill in Pilot Rock, construction worker for several construction companies in the area, truck driver for BPA and the Umatilla Army Depot. The career he most enjoyed was selling real estate. He truly enjoyed helping young families find and get into a "home of their own." However, Andy never lost his love for farming and always grew a beautiful big garden. The bounty was lovingly shared with family and friends.
Over the course of his lifetime Andy was affiliated with numerous service clubs and organizations, some of which were VFW, Fraternal Orders of Eagles, Shriner's, Pendleton Mainstreet Cowboys, and the Oregon Association of Realtors and Laborer's Union. He especially loved to help children.
During Andy's time in Pilot Rock he was involved in organizing the Labor Union for the mill workers and was also the driving force in establishing the Little League program there. He also coached the first Pilot Rock Little League baseball team.
Though not affiliated with a church at the time of his passing, Andy knew the Lord and shared his values with his family. Andy loved animals and had a special way with dogs and horses. His hobbies were hunting and fishing. His favorite was bird hunting with his dogs. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed football, wrestling, boxing and best of all, baseball.
Andy was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores; and five brothers; two sisters; and one great-grandchild, Colton Daniel Cooley.

A funeral service was held Friday, Feb. 9, at the New Hope Community Church in Hermiston. Burial with military honors followed in the Hermiston Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity or organization. Burns Mortuary of Hermiston is in charge of the arrangements.
