After the death of her mother when she was very young, she lived with her aunt and uncle (Bessie and Cleve Wagstaff). She was a registered nurse at the time she met Don Gerber. They were married on May 24, 1950 in Hernando, Mississippi. As a Marine wife, she moved with him to many locations including Memphis and Millington, Tennessee; Cherry Point, North Carolina; Alexandria, Virginia; and Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii.
