JoAnn was the second daughter of Elgin and Alpha Aichele Coffman. She was born at the home of her aunt and uncle, Gilbert and Hannah Aichele Kralman. She grew up on the family wheat farm 5 miles from Athena, Oregon. She graduated from Weston-McKuen High School in Athena. She worked on her family's farm and as a waitress. Her first husband was Gene Orlin Culbertson (married 1961); he was killed in a logging accident in 1971. Her second husband was Joseph Ryan (married March 1967); they moved from Athena, to Lynnwood, Snohomish Co., Washington. The marriage ended in divorce and she moved back to Athena.

Her health problems may have prevented her from reaching her true potential, but she approached life with a sense of childlike fun and excitement. She was a loving sister, mother, and aunt.
