Grandfather Bick was probably a farmer. Little is known about him. He was married to Margaret Amelia Hess in 1882, and they joined many other folks in the westward migration
in 1887 in the hope of making a better life for hemselves. Grover Cleveland was president, and cheap land was being offered to all comers. Bills were posted offering “Indian Land for Sale. Get a Home of Your Own. Easy Payments. Perfect Title. Possession with Thirty Days." This land was sold under sealed bid by the Department of the Interior after they had forced the Indians into reservations. The little Bick family, which consisted of Grandpa and Grandma and two small children by this time, made the trip westward probably by steam locomotive.
Unfortunately, things did not work out, as Grandfather Bick died of a lung ailment—probably tuberculosis—shortly after the birth of the third child, and Grandma had to travel
home alone with her small children. She settled on the Hess farm where she had been raised and spent the remaining sixty years of her life there.
