Charles "Charlie" Sterner III, 56, former borough manager for Gettysburg departed this life for eternal rest February 8 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was a fourth generation Gettysburg resident. His 26-year run as borough manager makes him one of the longest serving municipal managers in Pennsylvania.
Charlie was the son of the late Charles W. Jr. and Louetta (LeGore) Sterner.
A 1969 graduate of Gettysburg High School, he went on to receive his Associate's Degree from Penn State Mont Alto.
Charlie served as the Borough Manager of Gettysburg for 26 years until his retirement in June 2006. He was a member of the Pennsylvania League of Cities and Municipalities as well as a member and past-president of the Association of Pennsylvania Municipal Managers. He was currently employed with C.S. Davidson, Gettysburg, and had previously worked with Gettysburg Engineering.
Along with his wife, Mr. Sterner was the chairperson for the United Way of Adams County. He was a member of the U.S.S. Gettysburg Society where he served as president. He was also involved with the Sister Cities Program, and he often visited Gettysburg, S.D., Leon, Nicaragua, and Ste. Mere Eglise, France.
Mr. Sterner was a member and Past Master of the Free and Accepted Masons, Good Samaritan Lodge #336, Gettysburg, the Good Samaritan Royal Arch Chapter #266, and member and Past Commander of the Gettysburg Commandery #79. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie #1562, Gettysburg, and the American Legion, Post #202, Gettysburg and a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Gettysburg.
He was a proud fisherman, boater, and avid hunter, especially loving his time in Huntingdon County. Some of his favorite hobbies included cutting firewood and barbecuing. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Surviving, in addition to his dear wife, are his son, Charles W. Sterner IV and his wife Sue, of Gettysburg; two sisters, Sharon Sprankle and her husband Larry of Fairfield, and Corinne Weaver of Gettysburg; two grandchildren, Emberly and Tyler; and his faithful companion, his dog Nike.
