AGED WOMAN BURNED TO DEATH IN NEWBERRY
Mrs. Christian (sic) Ohmneis' (sic) Clothing Ignites From Blazing Paraffine
Newberry was the scene of three serious accidents Saturday afternoon, all occurring within the space of a few hours. The only fatal one occurred about 5 o'clock at the home of Robert L. Ohmneis (sic), 2031 Federal avenue. Mrs. Christian Ohmneis, aged 82 years, was burned to a crisp and died an hour later. When the accident occurred, she was assisting the wife of her grandson, Robert L. Ohmneis (sic) in canning cherries. Most of the cans had been filled and the aged woman was heating paraffine to place about the tops of the jars. The younger woman had left the kitchen for a short space of time, having gone into an outkitchen, when she heard cries for help coming from the other room. She rushed back and found the elderly lady a mass of flames. She threw a rug about her body, but the apparel of the victim blazed so fiercely that little help could be given her. Several men returning from work were attracted by the victim's screams and assisted in beating out the fire that remained and removing the burnt clothing from the body. Doctors G. Franklin Bell and John A. Campbell were summoned and gave every attention, but to no avail. The kitchen in which the accident occurred was also set on fire and No. 5 chemical was called to extinguish the blaze. When the younger Mrs. Ohmneis (sic) [Margaret T. Ohnmeiss] had recovered sufficiently to investigate the cause of the accident, she found that the paraffine had spilled over the entire stove. It is thought from this that the paraffine became overheated and that in removing the hot liquid from the fire the aged woman spilled it on the gas flames, causing them to shoot forth in all directions. The funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Christiana died at the age of: 81 years, 7 months, 13 days. Her cemetery headstone reads: "Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord doth come. St. Matt. 24:42"
