Malinda Clothier was the fifth of eight children born to Andrew Clothier and Frances "Fannie" Haynes. Both parents were born in Stoke-sub-Hamdon, Somerset, England. Malinda was born April 27, 1841, at Crowland, Welland County, Ontario, Canada. She married John Wesley Hirst sometime around 1864-1865. They had nine children: James Wesley, William Edgar, Frances Ann, Edmund E, Mary and Myron (twins), John Eli, Lettie May, and Adaline Malinda.

They moved to Iowa around 1866 and settled in Harrison County around 1892. John and Malinda joined the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1869, in the early years of the church, and were active and loyal members.
