Kathleen Beatrice Berkeley was born to Reginald William Fitzhardinge Berkeley and Caroline Mary Oldham Berkeley in London in 1898. She came to America in 1920, arriving on April 3rd through Philadelphia on the S.S. Haverford. She traveled to Stockton, California where her uncle's family lived. After a year there, she moved to San Francisco and met her future husband, Thomas Edward Norris, who was originally from Liverpool, England.
Kathleen and Tom married in San Francisco on March 19, 1923. Within a year they had their first child, James Berkeley Norris, followed by Francisco (Frank) Birkett Norris and David Oldham Norris (Donnie). The family lived in Forest Knolls in nearby Marin County in the years between 1932 and 1943. Kathleen lost her husband in 1937. Her oldest son, James, left home to join the merchant marines in 1941 and her second son, Frank, left for the seminary a short time later and her youngest, Donnie, joined the junior seminary. By the time she moved back to San Francisco in 1943 she had an empty nest.
While always an English lady at heart, Kathleen became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1945.
From 1949 to 1974 Kathleen lived on East Poplar Avenue in San Mateo, CA. She worked as a church secretary in San Bruno for many years. In her last years, she lived with her son Frank in Berkeley, CA.
Kathleen was an intelligent, independent, and cultured lady who enjoyed world travel, intellectual discussion and a nice glass of whiskey when the occasion called for it. She had great concern and compassion for the downtrodden and was not afraid to speak out against injustice. She was very fond of her friends and family, particularly her son James's six children.
Kathleen is buried with her beloved son, David Oldham Norris (Donnie).
