Charlie was the son of Nathan William Altman and Amy Tibbs; brother of Mattie, Nellie, Odessa May, William, Iva, Winford, Lenna May, Nathan Jr., Dorothy, Weldon, Bobby Lee, Gladys, and Linda; grandfather of Teresa and Melody; great-grandfather of James Charles.

One day, he was visiting family near Marlin when he met a beautiful young lady. They began writing to each other and getting together when he was in town. He proposed to this beautiful lady in a letter: Why don't we get married? She accepted, and February 17, 1944, Charlie married Edna Anna Alma Kersten. They moved to Roswell, New Mexico. Almost two years later, they had a beautiful baby girl, Charlotte Ann, who was the light of their lives. The next year, they moved to Artesia, where they lived for the next 18 years. A week before their 20th wedding anniversary, Charlie had a heart attack and passed away, leaving his loving wife and beautiful daughter behind. When recently asked why her mother never remarried, Charlotte said that he was the love of her life and she was never interested in anyone else. Charlie is still greatly missed by his wife, daughter, his remaining brothers and sisters and his extended family.
