Mrs. Susanna Alderdice was the only non-Indian casualty of the Summit Springs fight. Born Susanna Ziegler in N.E. Ohio in 1840, she married James A. Daily in Missouri in 1860 and shortly thereafter moved to Salina, Kansas. She had two sons with James before he volunteered for Union service in 1864. Daily soon died of typhoid fever at Ft. Leavenworth. In 1866, Susanna married Tom Alderdice and settled on a homestead along the Saline River near present-day Lincoln, Kansas. Susanna had a son and daughter with Tom. On May 30, 1869, while her husband was away, Tall Bull's band of Dog Soldiers raided homesteads near Lincoln, killing 9 settlers and capturing a pregnant Susanna, her 8 month old daughter Alice and Mrs. Maria Weichel, whose husband was killed. The dead in this raid included Susanna's 5 year old son John Daily and 2 year old son Frank Alderdice. Alice was strangled in the village 3 days later. Susanna and Maria remained in captivity 42 days until July 11, when Major Carr's 5th Cavalry, Buffalo Bill Cody and Pawnee Indians attacked Tall Bull's village here at Summit Springs. Maria was gravely wounded with a bullet in the back, but recovered. Susanna was fatally struck with a tomahawk to the face at the beginning of the fight. She was found by Capt. L. North at 8 A.M. on July 12. She was buried in the middle of the captured village. Her burial spot is today unknown. She is likely buried somewhere near the reservoir, about a third of a mile to the northeast of this marker. Incredibly, the day after the raid, Susanna's 4 year old son Willis Daily was found alive beside his dead brothers. His injuries included 5 arrows in his back, one which had to be removed with a bullet mold used as pliers, as it was firmly stuck in the back of his sternum. Raised by Susanna's parents, Willis died June 16, 1920 and is buried in the Spillman Cemetery at Ash Grove, Kansas. He had 3 children and 5 grandchildren.
