Martha was the daughter of Jeanette Brown and Daniel Upshaw.

Martha married Prince Albert Screws (later changed to Scruse). They were the parents of two daughters, Hattie and Katie "Katherine" Esther Scruse.

Katherine married Joe Jackson in 1949, they were the parents of Michael, Janet, LaToya, Jermaine, Steven "Randy", Marlon, Brandon, Sigmund "Jackie", Maureen "Rebbie" and Tariano "Tito" Jackson.

Martha's beloved grandson Michael Jackson, passed away June 25, 2009.
