Elvin Oscar "Shorty" Burklund was born on Monday, December 24, 1928 in Lyford, Texas to Oscar Nathaniel Burklund and Signe Wolander.

He had four siblings: Elvera Burklund Meredith, Edward Lee "Swede" Burklund, Margie Burklund Calhoun, and John "Leroy" Burklund.

On May 16, 1953, he met a beautiful young woman by the name of Nancy Irene Morgan. They were married on Thursday, July 16, 1953. They were blessed with five children: Donna Gail Burklund Deel, Nancy Faye Burklund Nesbit, Laurie Ann Burklund Gorton, Elvin "Wayne" Burklund and Mark Darrell Burklund.

He was also blessed with 10 grandchildren: Alan and Christopher Deel; Angela, Patrick and John David Nesbit; Grant and Grace Gorton; Kristen and Courtney Burklund and Tevyn Burklund.

Shorty proudly served his country as a soldier in the U.S. Army during the Korea War.

Shorty was an auto parts and paint supply salesman for many years. At his funeral a business associate told me that with the people that Shorty did business with his word and the shake of his hand was as good as any ironclad contract.

He was an 18-year member of the Manor Lions Club, serving as President in 1981-1982. He was also a member of the Manor I.S.D. School Board from 1976-1984 and a Precinct Election Judge for Travis County for 15 years.

He died on Thursday, February 29, 1996, at 11:18pm. He was 67 years old. He was buried in the Decker Methodist Church Cemetery in Manor with Pastor C. A. Caylor and Pastor Jim Lillard officiating.

Shorty faced his last days with dignity and great courage and was a tremendous inspiration to his family.

God could not have blessed his family with a more devoted son, brother, husband, father or grandfather.
