TEXAS - CO C 1 BN - 61 INF 5 INF DIV VIETNAM-DSM-PH
On February 5th, 1970, they were on a routine foot patrol of the DMZ area since the unit's mission was to guard the DMZ.
Also, they had lost some of the APC track vehicles due to mines during the previous days. Out of the four APCs assigned to the platoon, they were down to one and it was in the shop for a broken torsion bar.
While on patrol, they came upon a Vietcong flag on top of a hill. The Executive Officer who was acting company commander that day decided to put the company on line (which was only about 40 guys) and march up the hill toward the flag.
As they got within several feet, the Executive Officer decided to throw a grenade toward it.
Alaniz was next to Walter Howard, Platoon Leader.
As the XO yelled "grenade", everyone hit the ground. The next thing that happened, Howard was flying threw the air and being critically injured.
Alaniz was killed.
