Honorable John J. Buchanan, age 81.
Retired Alderman 10th Ward City of Chicago.
Lifelong of South East Side of Chicago.

Beloved husband of Lorraine (nee Halbe). Loving father of Patricia (Michael) Zumach & Jack (Joan) Buchanan. Cherished grandfather of Gregory, Elizabeth, Kelly, Katherine & John.

Dear son of the late Joseph & late Regina Buchanan. Fond brother of Raymond (Rita), Joan (Tom) Costello, Dennis (Chris), Robert (Jane) & late Dorothy Lissau. Dearest son in law of the late Fred & late Mary Halbe. Brother in law of the late Fred (June) Halbe. Uncle of many nieces & nephews. Veteran of U.S. Navy WWII. Member of Illiana A.L. Post #220.

Funeral services Wednesday March 23, 2005 from Elmwood Chapel to St. Francis de Sales Church. Mass at 11:00 am. Entombment Holy Cross Cemetery.

John was a dedicated public servant serving on numerous neighborhood civic organizations board of directors which resulted in the South Chicago Post Office being named after him for all his dedicated work to the residents of the South East Side.

Mr. Buchanan worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. His reputation as the neighborhood insurance man propelled him into the quasi-official position of mayor of the East Side in 1962.
"After that," recalled Lorraine, Mr. Buchanan's wife of 58 years, "everyone wanted him to run for alderman. Wherever he went they said, 'John, you have to run.' And he would say, 'I know I won't win, but people are bothering me to run, and I'll never hear the end of it if I don't.' "
Mr. Buchanan ran and in 1963 was elected alderman of the 10th Ward.
"Politics was his life," remembers Lorraine. "He just liked working with people."
"He loved the community, it's what he was," said his son, Jack Buchanan.
