Wellington D. Brown was born on the 21st of October 1862 in Richmond, New Brunswick, Canada to Hiram K. and Sara Ann (Stillman) Brown. He was the second child and only son of Hiram and Sara. Sara passed away when Wellington was about a year old when. Hiram married Eliza Jane Duffield on 20 October 1864, when Wellington was 2 years old.

In the 1870 US Census, the family is living in Houlton, Maine where Wellington's father had a farm. Over the course of 25-30 years, the family would move back and forth across the US – Canada Border. This is shown by examining the family's location in the 1880, 1891, and 1900 US and Canadian Censuses.
Although the true relationship is unclear, in 1890, Wellington was in a relationship with Alice Mae Gardner. Although he was not named on the birth record and not officially recognized as the father, Wellington was the father of Alice's son, LeRoy George, born 25 Mar 1890. This relationship did not last, as in 1890, Wellington married Alice Mae's first cousin, Maud Gerrish.

In the 1880s and 1890s, Wellington worked for the Gardner Saw Mill, which was owned by Enoch and John H. Gardner (father of Alice Mae). The Gardner brothers had a sister named Hannah, who married John E. Gerrish (parents of Maud)

Wellington and Maud were the parents of three children, Earl D. (1895-1895), Mona R. (1896-1995) and Daphine W. (1904-1978)
Wellington continued to work as a millhand, and eventually a carpenter at the sawmill.
Wellington Brown died on 06 Sept 1943 and was buried in Dyer Brook Cemetery, near his small son Earl and his Gerrish in-laws.
