Civil War Union Army Officer. He served first as a Private in the 1st Philadelphia City Troop, Pennsylvania Militia from May 13, 1861 to August 17, 1861. He then was commissioned as Major of the 2nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry on October 28, 1861. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on March 1, 1862, he became the commander of the regiment when Colonel Richard Butler Price was advanced to brigade command on September 10, 1862. He would go on to lead the unit for most of the next year and a half. Brevetted Colonel, US Volunteers in August 1864, he was honorably mustered out on February 25. 1865 when his enlistment expired.

On February 10, he filed for a United States Army Pension (Application #1370856, Certificate #1146439). On November 18, 1915 his wife, Kate M.P. Brinton, filed for a United States Army Widow's Pension (Application #1058881, Certificate #807324).
