On March 17 1992, the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires was bombed. Until 1994, it was Argentina's deadliest terror attack and remains the deadliest attack on an Israeli diplomatic mission. A truck was driven into the front of the Embassy, and a bomb was detonated by a suicide bomber. The explosion not only destroyed the Embassy, it also destroyed a Catholic Church and a nearby school. The blast killed 29 people, several were Israeli but most of them were Argentinians, many of them children. It also wounded 242. The group known as Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility in retaliation for the assassination of Sheikh Abbas al-Musawi a leader of the group Hezbollah. The current Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires is one of the most protected buildings in the world.
