First Officer (Pilot) LeRoy Wilton Homer, Jr, of United Airlines Flight 93, was in his sixth year as a commercial airline pilot with United. He graduated from the United States Air Force Academy (Class of 1987), was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and completed USAF Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT), in 1988. He was assigned to the 18th Military Airlift Squadron, McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey, as a Lockheed C-141 Starlifter (heavy transport aircraft) pilot. In 1995, Capt Homer separated from active duty in 1995 and continued his military career as a U.S. Air Force Reserve C-141 Instructor Pilot, 356th Airlift Squadron, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, while joining United Airlines as a Boeing 727 Second Officer. He upgraded to First Officer on the Boeing 757/767 in 1996, where he remained until September 11, 2001. United Airlines Flight 93 was a domestic scheduled passenger flight that was hijacked by four Al-Qaeda terrorists on board, as part of the September 11 attacks. It crashed into a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, during an attempt by the passengers and crew to regain control. All 44 people aboard were killed, including the four hijackers, but no one on the ground was injured. He and his wife Melodie Thorpe Homer were married on May 24, 1998 and were the parents of one daughter, Laurel. Major Homer, USAFRES was posthumously awarded an honorary membership in the Tuskegee Airmen.
