Solan Thomas Bowen Died September 1, 2009 Jewett City - Solan Thomas Bowen, 28, from Jewett City, CT died unexpectedly on Tuesday September 1, 2009, in Plainfield, CT. Solan was born in Putnam, CT to Thomas Bowen and Saralyn (Sallie Pratt) Bowen on March 7, 1981. He attended elementary school at Lisbon Central School and graduated from Griswold High School, as a member of Chamber Choir class of 1999. Solan's true passion in life was music. At the age of 13 he learned to play the guitar. He was a singer/songwriter and played numerous instruments. Not only did he delight his family and friends with his talent but also fans at various places around the area, including, The Rain Desert Café, Putnam Fourth of July Festival, Mohegan Sun, Gilligan's Island, and Foxwoods Casino, etc. He was looking forward to singing at his sister's wedding October 3, 2009. He also had a remarkable talent for working with his hands: woodworking, drawing, painting and sculpting. Solan was a free spirit, living each day as it came. He was a good friend and confidante to many. He will be missed immeasurably. He had an appreciation for nature and loved spending time outdoors. Some of his favorite vacations were Yosemite, CA, Shirley Mills, ME, and his motorcycle trip to Canada. He is survived by his immediate family; father, Tom Bowen of Pomfret, CT; his mother Saralyn (Sallie) Bowen and Brian Shippam, of Rohnert Park, CA; his sister, Autumn Bowen and Brett Ford, of Jewett City, CT; his maternal grandparents, Walter and Jeanne Pratt, of Norwich, CT; his paternal grandmother Norma Bowen, of Danielson, CT; and his extended family; his sister Michelle Balicki and Ken Thomas, their children, his nephew Tyler McCarthy and his niece Madison Thomas all of Salem, CT; his girlfriend Stephanie Filteau and her children Tori Pentell, and Ella Major all from Plainfield, CT; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. To honor Solan and his wishes a traditional funeral will be forgone and a memorial celebration of his life will be held on Sunday September 6, 2009 at from 1-6pm held at 1193 Plainfield Pike (Route 14A) in Oneco/Sterling, CT. Please park at the Sterling Municipal Building next door.
