Ranger was a 4-year-old Malinois, born in Holland. He served with the Long Beach Police Department for two years before being killed in the line of duty -- shot by a paroled armed robber. Ranger was shot once in the chest. He succumbed to his wound during surgery. The suspect identified only as a known gang member with an extensive criminal record was shot by police when he fired on K-9 Ranger. The suspect died at the scene.
