Author, journalist. He was attending Hobart College at the outbreak of World War One. When that occured he enlisted in the US Army, Division 5 and served as a wagoner in France. After the war, he worked as a journalist in Detroit, Washington D.C. and New York City, where he met his wife, Katherine Towell. He came to Rochester in 1923 to take a job with the Gannett Group's Democrat & Chronicle, from which he finally retired in 1963 having held almost every position on the staff at some point in his career with the newspaper. He also spent ten years on the staff of the Rochester-based "Journal American". He was a prolific writer on the subject of Western and Upstate New York and its pioneers and notables, for which he is often referred to as the "Poet Laureate" of Upstate New York. Many of his books were based on the local history column which he began for the Democrat & Chronicle in 1939, and which he continued to write after his official retirement.
