"Hazel Merrideth Barrett, 81, of 810 W. Home Ave., Selah, died Thursday in St. Elizabeth Hospital.

She was born Feb. 22, 1898 in Colorado, one of nine children of Edward and Tillisty French. The family moved to Condor, Alberta, where she was raised and educated.

On April 6, 1920, she married Sydney A. Barrett and they moved to the Yakima Valley in 1923. They operated ranches in the Harwood and Selah areas for many years. Mrs. Barrett worked as a fruit sorter in several fruit warehouses in Selah for many years. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.

Her husband died Feb. 21, 1971.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Viola Boyd and Mrs. Effie Brown, both of Seattle, and Mrs. Mary Brooks of San Diego, Calif.; two sons, Lorne Barrett of Goldendale and Vernon Barrett of LaPine, Ore.; four sisters, Agnes Sturdevant of Vernonia, Ore., Evelyne L. Curcio and Dorethea Evans, both of Yakima, and Ella A Tamberello of Seattle; three brothers, Edward E. French and Harry A. French, both of Yakima, and Ralph W. French of Selah; 17 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren." Yakima Herald Republic.
