Don grew up on a farm outside of Dwight and graduated from Dwight Rural High School in 1946. He attended the College of Emporia, where he met his wife, Elaine, and graduated in 1950. Don earned twelve college athletic letters: four in football, four in basketball, and four in track. In 1950 Ek broke the 1928 KCAC track record in the shot put. He was the All-Conference fullback in 1949.

Not long after leaving C of E, he was a member of the 1952 United States Navy Pacific Fleet Football Team. He eventually rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, was a veteran of the Korean War, and served in the Naval reserves. He went on to receive his Master's Degree from Emporia State University. His first teaching and coaching job was in Overbrook, Kansas.

In 1956, after serving in the Navy, they moved back to Emporia, where Don taught math and served as Assistant Principal at Emporia High and later Principal at Roosevelt High School. Excerpt from Don's mother's bio:

Donald Eugene Ek was born just NW of Delavan, KS on February 26, 1929. In March of 1931 the family moved to a farm NW of White City, Kansas. The next move for the family was in about March of 1933, to a farm SW of Skiddy, Kansas. This place was called the Hanson place and it was in the fall of 1934 that Don started school at District #72, a little country school just up over the hill from their home. In about 1936 they moved to what was called the Swenson place North of White City, Kansas or East of Skiddy. The family lived on the Swenson place until March of 1943, when they moved to the Goss place North of Dwight, Kansas. Don was an eighth grader. In March 1945 his parents made their last move - they bought a farm, one mile north and two miles west of Dwight.
