She had given birth to her last child, Dolphus, on August 4, 1896. She was tending to her garden with her oldest son, William Amaziah Varner, when a Dove flew from the sky and lit on her head. She told William, "That is a sign from God that I will die soon." Her words were prophetic when she died a few days later in August.
Dolphus was raised by Sarah Cansadie's parents, William and Mary Mehearg. Later, Lucian married Katie Morris.
