John H. Stickel was one of six (6) children born from the marriage of George and Sarah Jane (Swick) Stickel. He spent most of his life working as a farmer, but was a Civil War veteran, having served in COMPANY D, 6TH WV INFANTRY.
John was evidently married three (3) times: the first marriage was to a F. (Crutcher) Stickel on Jan 3, 1867 in Barbour Co., WV. Mrs. Stickel DOD and burial location are both unknown. His second marriage was to Martha M. (Stout) Stickel on Mar 19, 1870 in Doddridge Co., WV. It is believed that Martha died circa 1938 in Virginia. In addition, it is believed that there were two infants born from this marriage, neither survived. John's third marriage was to Clara (Knisley) Stickel, daughter of Holdridge C. and Lucinda (McPherson) Knisley. Clara was born Feb 2, 1861 in Harrison Co., WV--and died May 7, 1929 at the age of 68 yrs, 3 mo, 7 days near Milton, in Doddridge Co., WV.
John Henry died Aug 22, 1932 at the age of 95 yrs, 7 mo, 16 days from 'old age.' He is believed to be buried with his second wife Martha in Eddy Cemetery, and a single gravestone marks the final resting place of this couple.
