Pvt. Vincent C. Winston Jr. of St. Louis, Missouri was the oldest of three boys. He signed up for the Job Corps in St. Louis after going to high school in Tennessee. Vince had been in the Army for two years and he was deployed to Afghanistan in July. Joining the military was family tradition. He was following in his father's footsteps. His mother didn't want him to enlist during a time a war, but he wanted to get off the streets and make a future for himself. He also wanted to someday become a police officer. He died in Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. He was 22.
